چکیده

We study the statistical mechanics of supercooled liquids when system evolves at a temperature $T$ with field $\epsilon$ linearly coupled to its overlap reference configuration same liquid sampled $T_0$. use mean-field theory fully characterize influence $T_0$, and we mainly case fixed, low-$T_0$ value in computer simulations. numerically investigate extended phase diagram $(\epsilon,T)$ plane model glass-forming spatial dimensions $d=2$ $d=3$, relying on umbrella sampling reweighting techniques. For both $2d$ $3d$ cases, similar phenomenology nontrivial thermodynamic fluctuations is observed low temperatures, but detailed finite-size analysis reveals qualitatively distinct behaviors. establish existence first-order transition line for nonzero ending critical point universality class random-field Ising (RFIM) $d=3$. In instead, no found large enough systems least down temperatures below extrapolated calorimetric glass $T_g$. Our results confirm that samples limited size display expected finite undergoing random transition. They also support relevance physics RFIM liquids, which may then explain qualitative difference between glass-formers.

Mechanics of Supercooled Liquids

Pure substances can often be cooled below their melting points and still remain in the liquid state. For some supercooled liquids, a further cooling slows down viscous flow greatly, but does not slow down self-diffusion as much. We formulate a continuum theory that regards viscous flow and self-diffusion as concurrent, but distinct, processes. We generalize Newton’s law of viscosity to relate s...

Statistical mechanics of bubbly liquids

The dynamics of bubbles at high Reynolds numbers is studied from the viewpoint of statistical mechanics. Individual bubbles are treated as dipoles in potential flow. A virtual mass matrix of the system of bubbles is introduced, which depends on the instantaneous positions of the bubbles, and is used to calculate the energy of the bubbly flow as a quadratic form of the bubbles’ velocities. The e...

namics of supercooled liquids ?

Europhysics Letters PREPRINT Are there localized saddles behind the heterogeneous dynamics of supercooled liquids? Abstract. – We numerically study the interplay between heterogeneous dynamics and properties of negatively curved regions of the potential energy surface in a model glassy system. We find that the unstable modes of saddles and quasi-saddles undergo a localization transition close t...

Supercooled Liquids and Glasses

Glasses are materials that are much more common in our daily life than one might naively expect. Apart from the obvious (inorganic) glasses, such as wine glasses, bottles and windows, we also have the organic (often polymeric) glasses, such as most plastic materials (bags, coatings, etc.). In the last few years also metallic glasses have come to our daily (St. Andrews) life since they are used,...

Supercooled Liquids and Polyamorphism

We have discovered a solid, apparently amorphous phase of triphenyl phosphite to which the supercooled liquid converts, a phase distinct from both the glass and the crystal. To date, this is the clearest and best identified case of a first-order transition from a liquid to another apparently amorphous condensed phase. We discuss this phenomenon in terms of a recently formulated theory of superc...
